Students in the Environmental Engineering program recently had the opportunity to visit the Cheshire, Connecticut office of SLR Consulting as part of the School’s growing Industry Mentorship Program.

Environmental engineering students Eve Gatto and Calla Kutschke visited the office alongside fellow student Charlotte Cabral, where they met with industry professionals and learned more about career pathways in environmental engineering and consulting. The visit was hosted by Jeanine Armstrong Gouin, President and Managing Director – U.S. for SLR International Corporation and a mentor in the Spring 2026 Civil and Environmental Engineering Industry Mentorship Program.

The mentorship initiative, led by Professor in Residence and Director of Innovation and Student Success Sarira Motaref, connects undergraduate students with engineering professionals to support career development, networking, and industry engagement.

According to student participant Calla Kutschke, the experience provided valuable insight into both the engineering profession and leadership in the industry.

“From learning about her personal path through engineering to seeing her in action as the President of a renowned global consulting firm, I can say without a doubt that this has been one of the most valuable experiences I have had at UConn.”

Gouin has been an active supporter of the mentorship program and emphasized the importance of continued industry engagement with students. In correspondence with the School earlier this semester, she shared that one of her previous mentees recently accepted a full-time position with SLR.

“What a great group of students!” Gouin said following the April office visit.

The mentorship program encourages regular meetings between students and professionals throughout the academic year, helping students gain exposure to real-world engineering practice, mentorship, and professional development opportunities beyond the classroom.

The School is grateful to Jeanine Armstrong Gouin, SLR Consulting, and all participating mentors for supporting the next generation of civil and environmental engineers.
