Job Description:

The Cooper Group: Construction Project Management Internship Program

OUR COMPANY

The Cooper Group has been a leader in historical restoration, renovation and reproduction for over 30 years. Our administrative and design offices are located in North Stonington, CT. with millwork and window factories in Pawcatuck and Glastonbury. In addition, we have a full field construction division.

Recent projects include the restoration of all the windows in Connecticut Hall, which is the oldest building on the Yale campus. We are also replacing the historic windows in the Yale Music Museum with high energy efficient replications of the original 1870 windows. Other active projects include the restoration of the St. George Mormon temple in Utah, the Andover Hall at Harvard and Hillard Mills in Connecticut.

SCOPE

  1. Develop and coordinate project schedules with client Construction Project Management companies (Whiting- Turner, Shawmut, Grunley etc.), client architectural firms and The Cooper Group.
  2. Develop and maintain project schedules using Phoenix Project Management software.
  3. Evaluate other PERT and CPM software and recommend application for use by The Cooper Group.
  4. Coordinate Manufacturing and Field Construction schedules to ensure adequate resources are available or planned for to support all internal and client schedules.
  5. Provide analysis of changes to project schedule regarding the impact to staffing, materials requirements, cash flow and profitability.

SLAM: Structural Engineering Internship

SLAM

Working in a multi-disciplinary team environment, the Student Intern will perform assignments under
the direct supervision of Structural Engineering professionals.

As a student intern you will assist experienced Structural Engineers on a variety of tasks which may include; shop fabrication drawing review; assisting with the preparation of contract documents in a BIM environment (including drawings and specifications); attending coordination meetings, learning how to apply building codes to design, performing calculations on specific design tasks (gravity framing, lateral analysis, foundations); computer modeling of structures for analysis and design
(training assistance); and assisting an experienced Structural Engineer during a site visit or an investigation of an existing building. Some paid travel may be required.

Preferred Qualifications

•  Must have completed basic foundational courses such as Structural Steel Design, ReinforcedConcrete Design, a first course in Structural Analysis, Foundation Design and/or Geotechnical Engineering.

• Additional structural engineering design/analysis classes preferred.

• Experience with Engineering documents (reading plans, specifications, and report writing)

2020 Architectural Staff Engineer: (also hiring interns)

We seek versatile and highly motivated entry-level Architectural Staff Engineer who will play a key role in our dynamic building services engineering group servicing private and public clients across New England. Positions involves researching  materials and assemblies for appropriate incorporation into design and construction drawings as directed by a project manager; visiting project sites during design and construction to gather information and view progress of construction; preparing design and construction drawings using information supplied by Senior Architect and/or Project Manager or data obtained from research activities; integration of information from consultants and suppliers into models and drawings; and logging in the submittals and routing them to the appropriate party for review.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Architectural Engineering, Architecture, or Structural Engineering
  • Demonstrated building construction technical experience is preferred
  • Experience with Revit, AutoCAD and MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint

 2020 Civil Staff Engineer: (also hiring interns)

We seek versatile and highly motivated entry-level Civil Staff Engineers who will play a key role in our dynamic site/civil engineering group servicing private and public clients across New England. Positions involve tasks related to site planning, design, permitting, and construction phase services for land use, transportation, energy, and coastal projects. Responsibilities will include site layout and grading utilizing AutoCAD, computer modeling, hydraulic / hydrologic analyses, stormwater management, infrastructure analysis and design, preparation of technical specifications and cost estimates, preparation of reports and correspondence, construction observation, and shop drawing and submittal review.

Requirements:

  • BS degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering
  • Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam is expected
  • Internship or work experience in survey, site engineering, design, permitting, and/or construction observation
  • Hands-on experience with CADD and hydraulic/hydrologic studies and modeling preferred

 2020 Electrical Staff Engineer: (also hiring interns)

We seek versatile and highly motivated entry-level Electrical Staff Engineers who will play a key role in our dynamic Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing group servicing private and municipal clients across New England. Electrical Staff Engineers will be involved, as part of a multidisciplinary team, with the electrical engineering design activities for a variety of commercial, institutional, higher education, healthcare, water and wastewater treatment projects, as well as municipal, industrial and renewable energy projects.

Requirements:

  • BS degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Should be familiar with electrical power distribution system design; control wiring and circuit design; lighting design; fire / security alarm design; arc flash and coordination studies; power quality analysis
  • Familiarity with National Electrical Code
