Seeking Qualified TAs

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Connecticut is seeking qualified applicants to our Ph.D. or MS programs in Civil Engineering and Environmental Engineering.

Specifically, we are seeking to provide financial support to students who will serve as Teaching Assistants for our undergraduate Programs in Civil Engineering and Environmental Engineering. Three positions are available, one with focus in Structural Engineering, one in Transportation Engineering and one in Environmental Engineering. Minimum qualifications are:

– A B.S. in Civil Engineering or Environmental Engineering (candidates with M.S. degrees preferred).
– A minimum Grade Point Average of 3.0 (higher than 3.5 preferred)
– GRE scores (preferred Verbal >153, Quantitative >159 and Writing > 5.0)
– A valid TOEFL IBT score with a speaking subscore of 27 or higher, an IELTS speaking band score of 8.0 or higher, or a Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE) score of 74 or higher.

Candidates with a TOEFL IBT score between 22 and 26 may be considered as second priority. Candidates with TOEFL IBT scores below 22 will not be considered.

The deadline for the PhD programs is January 1st. Candidates will be evaluated and undergo a Skype interview process.

Candidates should address the following aspects in their personal statement upon submission of their application:

1. Courses they are qualified to serve as Teaching Assistants from the list below (see https://cee.engr.uconn.edu/undergraduate/course-offerings for descriptions and syllabi).
2. Their preferred area of concentration and research interests.

CE 2412 Geomatics Field Methods (with lab component)

CE 3520 Civil Engineering Materials (with lab component)
CE 3630 Design of Steel Structures
CE 3640 Design of Reinforced Concrete Structures
CE 4410 Site Design (with lab component)
CE 4710 Case Studies in Transportation Engineering

Courses in Environmental Engineering:

ENVE 2310 Environmental Engineering Fundamentals
ENVE 3120 Fluid mechanics (with lab component)
ENVE 3200 Environmental Engineering Laboratory

Successful candidates will receive a full-time teaching assistantship (https://grad.uconn.edu/financing/assistantships/) guaranteed for two years of their studies, with a potential for renewal pending satisfactory performance in academics and teaching duties.
