Ying Zhang Receives WTS Rhode Island Graduate Scholarship

Ph.D. student Ying Zhang has received the Helene M. Overly Memorial Graduate Scholarship from the Rhode Island Chapter of WTS International, an organization dedicated to advancing women in transportation.

The scholarship recognizes graduate students pursuing careers in transportation and honors the legacy of Helene M. Overly, who helped open doors for women in the transportation industry through mentorship, leadership, and advocacy.

Zhang’s research focuses on improving transportation system performance through advanced statistical methods and public transit operations. Her work aims to support the development of transportation systems that are more efficient, reliable, and sustainable.

“I am deeply honored to receive this award, which represents not only recognition but also a meaningful legacy of women supporting, mentoring, and opening doors for the next generation in STEM and transportation,” Zhang said. “I hope to carry this legacy forward through my research on improving transportation system performance and advancing efficient, reliable, and sustainable transportation systems.”

Zhang is advised by Assistant Professor Fatemeh Fakhrmoosavi.
